Depression “Why art thou cast down, oh my soul?” This question asked by the
psalmist could be the central question asked by anyone dealing with depression.Patti Page, in the 1960’s
had a hit song that could be a theme song for those suffering from depression. In the chorus of that song the question is
asked “. . . is that all there is my friend, then let’s keep dancing, let’s break out the booze
and have a ball, if that’s all there is . . .”. Christians are not immune to this illness. You may ask how can
that be? How can someone be a Christian and be depressed? Why those very words are contradictory, they are incompatible, aren’t
they?Scripture Examples King David in Psalm 42: 5 “Why art thou down cast of my soul? Jonah
in Jonah 4:3 “It is better for me to live than to die”. Elijah in I Kings 19: 3-12 Depression
is not necessarily a sign of spiritual failure. In the Scripture stories some of the greatest depressions came as emotional
letdowns following the greatest spiritual successes. Depression can and often does follow such victories in our lives as having
a child, graduating from high school or college, etc. Someone once said it is like natures kickback. Bob
